My husband's company had a large layoff today. While he survived, many of the people we have known for years did not.
Nothing like hearing that friends have lost their jobs right before Christmas to make exams seem like small, silly things. Yeah, exams are tough. But losing your job when you've got a newborn kid? Harder. Losing your job when you're sixty-three years old in an industry that effectively doesn't hire aging engineers? Harder.
I know that some of you who got laid off read my blog. I'm so sorry. I am thinking of you.

Having recently come from the world of the unemployed not so long ago (got new job in February) I feel for all the people who lose their jobs around this time of year. I lost my job in October last year, and while I was lucky to find a new job so quickly, not having any money around the holidays sure can make the holidays pretty glum. To all the laid off - keep your chin up, at least the economy is improving, meager words at this time of year, but the tech scene is recovering.
It's been hard. My husband (an IT instructor) had been out of work for over a year. He got a new job last Jan, & we're finally getting back on our feet. I'm amazed at how many people in my paralegal classes are older people changing careers. For example, one guy is an EE whose been out of work for about 2 years, another has a PhD in chemistry. Both are taking these classes to work up to applying at a law school. I'm glad your husband has held on!
I'm sorry, too. This just sucks. I hope Santa fills those HR bigwigs stockings with cow dung.
It is pretty bad right now. I think, though, tech is picking up a little bit... I hope!
