what's in a name

I read an article in the Wall Street Journal a few days ago about recent trends in baby names. There has been an increase in babies named after products, such as Chanel, Armani, Manolo, or, for that name which screams high quality, Rayon. There were examples: somewhere in this country there is a set of unfortunate twins named Camry and Lexus.

This alone is troubling, but it doesn't stop there. Another growing trend is to name your child after the alcohol that you were drinking when the kid was conceived. To this end there has been an increase in the number of Courvoisiers, Skyys, and Bacardis. The brand-agnostic have generated an increase in Martinis.

I suppose nothing says, "I love you, honey" like reminding your child every time he hears his name that he was the product of a drunken hook-up.

Ohmigosh! I'd be named after some kind of whiskey (Dad drink) or soft drink (Mom drink, no alchy) like ... shoot, can't remember the name. Pips? RC Cola? No.

Okay, just call me Pip.

Wow, so you could be Jack Daniels Pip. Or Pip Jack Daniels. Except you're not male, not that that would stop some of these namers. A boy named Sue, a girl named Jack, same difference.
