the craft zone

I entered the scary craft zone known as Michaels today.

This was a brave step for me because I am craft-pathetic. The most I have ever managed are some gift photo albums with fancy stickers and multi-colored writing on them. I was pretty proud of myself for those, actually, but on the crafty scale of things, that barely registers. I've never had any reason to go to Michaels before.

I faced my craft fear today, however. It's amazing what impending parenthood will do.

We have painted our boy's room with bright yellow walls and a blue ceiling. We then took a deep breath and bought star stencils.

The stars made us ambitious. We dreamt of planets and maybe a comet. So it was off to Michaels for me.

And, oh! The disappointment! There are many, many stencils at Michaels, but only two of them resembled solar system objects. One of them had evenly spaced horizontal stripes with a loop around it. I think it was supposed to be Saturn, but I'm not sure. The other had three or four thick wiggly lines across a globe. It looked like a moldy snowglobe, not a planet.

Sadly, accurate depictions of stellar bodies do not appear to be a high priority of Michaels. I left empty-handed. I'm not going to subject our boy to moldy snowglobe astronomy.

(These are just stencils, you don't have to use glow-in-the-dark paint.)

Or you can always try freehand...

Try the Discovery Store at your local mega-mall.  You can spot it - it's the one the nerdy kids are all standing around, playing hackie-sack and drooling over the really nice telescopes... :)  Great stick-on planetary objects, mobiles, etc.

Thank you both! I'm going to check both of these out.

Honey, paint your own ceiling or mural. Get a map that you like of the solar system...Use non-toxic paints and go for it.   If you really think you will not get the out come you want.  Try this... be a bit eclectic. go to  www.art.com look up solar system art work - there are different maps and photo prints for inexpensive prices.  If this is a priority in your life(eg. you are an astronomer or want your children to learn this - which we all need to know) then invest in some texts or even try the nasa website.  I'd be very realistic and bright in painting the solar system in a child's room. Just because children need brightness - as well as darkness (when he/she sleeps) so take these into consideration before you go too far.  You might even want simple things in your own room(bedroom and other places in the house) to show how serious your are about the heavens. Take time to plan. Adios Amiga!
